Gibson Memorial Church
Celebrates 117th Year

May 5 at 10 a.m. Gibson Memorial Church celebrates its 117 th year of Christian service.
The church began in 1874 as part of the Methodist Circuit including churches in Douglas and Robinson. In 1879 a sanctuary was built on land donated by Robert and Josephy Macklin. Alexander “Boss” Gibson was instrumental in paying off the debt in 1881. On April 25th , 1940, the original church was destroyed by fire and the present building erected in September of that year. In 1981 a Christian Education Centre was erected serving the needs of both church and community. In 1925 the congregation became a part of the United Church of Canada. It has been served by 34 ordained ministers. The present minister is Rev. Robert Stevens whose ministry began in 1983.

Anniversary celebrations include a Seniors Appreciation Dinner on May 4, a congregational Family Breakfast from 8:00-9:30 a.m. on May 5 and the Anniversary Service at 10:00 a.m.. The choir, directed by Eleanor Bilenski, will present special music. The guest speaker will be Rev. Don MacPherson of North Bedeque, P.E.I. Don is a former employee of the City of Fredericton 's Planning Department and a teacher. He is the son of the late Elwood MacPherson who once served in Chipman United Church. He was ordained by the Maritime Conference in 1989.
A former minister of Gibson Memorial, Rev. George Gillis, will be installed as Minister Emeritus. A cordial welcome is extended to all.
