Pleased With “The Road Back” Last night every available space in the vestry of the Gibson Memorial Church, South Devon, was occupied when “The Road Back” was put on by the congregation under the direction of Mrs. E.P. Dayton. The play was full of interest from start to finish and each member of the cast delighted the audience with their splendid work. The specialties were also excellent as was also the music by the orchestra under the direction of Fred Mawer. The cast was as follows: Ma Fowler, Mrs. Ivan McKeil; Pa Fowler, Claude Simms; Jennie and Minnie Fowler, Hilda Blakney and Helen Bird; Mrs. Blinders, a gossipin' neighbour, Mrs. Douglas Barnes; George Fowler, son of the household, Walter Fraser; Arthur McLeod, friend of Jennie's, Robert Harvey; Blake Chester, in love with Nellie, Howard Peters; Mr. Harrison, Jennie's employer, D.C. Barnes; Ben Fowler, Pa's brother, Henry Peters; Mrs. Chester, Blake's mother, Mrs. C.N. Smith; Those taking part in the specialties were: Walter Fraser, the soloist; Misses Helen Kiley, Jean Sacre, Elizabeth Simms, Elizabeth Niles, Hilda Blankney, Jean Flowers, Avis Wister. Mrs. Ray Burpee was the efficient pianist. |
One of the most delightful affairs in church circles for some time was held yesterday at the home of Mrs. E.P. Dayton, South Devon, when the Ladies Aid of the Gibson Memorial Church were at home to their friends. The spacious rooms were decorated with flowers and ferns from Miss Schleyer's, tulips and hydrangea being used in the living room, yellow and mauve flowers and yellow tapers being used in the dining room. Mrs. Charles Bird admitted the guests who were received by Mrs. Dayton, Mrs. Alex Burns and Mrs. Harry Burns. They were ushered to the dining room by Mrs. Harry Miller, where tea was being served. Mrs. William Harvey and Mrs. Walter Long presided the first hour, Mrs. Archie Hansen and Mrs. Douglas Barnes the second hour and Mrs. Harry Fradsham and Mrs. J.J. Lawson the last hour. The table was centred with a silver basket of yellow and mauve tulips, silver candlesticks with mauve and yellow candles and silver baskets of confections in the same shades. Those serving and assisting in other ways were Mrs. J. Ray Burpee, Mrs. Earl Niles, Mrs. Harry Pond, Mrs. P. S. Watson, Mrs. Jasper Dickison, Mrs. Claude Simms, Mrs. Guy Matthews, Mrs. George Chalmers, Mrs. Melvin McKiel, Mrs. ? Sheppard, Mrs. T. Wister, Mrs. J. Lawson. Had Candlelight Service
Two groups of the C.G.I.T. of the Gibson Memorial Church, South Devon, held a candlelight service in the church which was both instructive and interesting. The 28 girls marched into the church in their uniforms singing “O Worship the King”. Miss Helen Bird, one of the leaders, read the scripture; Mrs. Burns, wife of the pastor, gave an inspiring address to the girls, which was both inspirational and instructive, she being a clever speaker; Miss Carolyn Robinson sang a solo; Mrs. E.P. Dayton, the other leader, made the announcements, and each of the girls took part in the prayer. The salutation of the flag was most impressive and the forming of the “Friendship Circle” , the girls singing “Follow the Gleam”, the C.G.I.T. hymn, the purpose and Taps brought the service to a close. |
Last evening the different groups of the C.G.I.T. of Gibson Memorial Church entertained at a mother and daughter banquet in the vestry of the church, which was decorated in blue and white, the colours of the groups. The girls were in uniform and Miss Grace Young acted as toastmistress when the following list was honoured: The King, responded to by singing the National Anthem; Our Church, proposed by Helen Bird and responded to by Mrs. Harry Burns; Our Mothers, proposed by Marjorie Dickison and responded to by Mrs. A.D. Barnes; C.G.I.T. Movement, proposed by Marion Smith and responded to by Mrs. E.P. Dayton. A singsong followed and Taps brought the pleasant function to a close. Votes of thanks were extended to Mrs. J. Ray Burpee, Mrs. H.A. Peters and Mrs. Ivan McKiel, who served, the vote being moved by Elizabeth Niles and seconded by Helen Kiley. |
Supper Well Attended In spite of the intense cold on Saturday afternoon a large number of people were present at the pancake supper given by the C.G.I.T. of the Gibson Memorial Church, South Devon. The basement was attractively decorated in the colours of the group and the serving was done by the girls under their leader, Mrs. E. P. Dayton. Pancakes, pork, honey and apple pie were served and those who braved the elements were well repaid. |
